šŸFun and Educational Fall Activities for Children

Writer's picture: Curiosity AcademyCuriosity Academy

Fall is a wonderful time to engage in activities with children that are both fun and beneficial for their overall development. Here are some of our favorite Fall activities that can help enhance their fine and gross motor skills, as well as foster creativity.

Nature Walks & Fall Scavenger Hunts

Explore the changing colors of the leaves and discover nature items like acorns, pinecones, and twigs. This activity not only allows children to appreciate the beauty of nature but also develops their observation skills. By observing the colors and textures of nature, children can learn about the changing seasons and the natural world around them. So, the next time you're out for a walk, encourage your child to take a closer look at leaves and collect some nature treasures along the way.

Leaf Painting

Leaf painting is a fun activity that combines art and nature. It allows children to explore colors, shapes, and textures while sparking their creativity and imagination. To get started, collect leaves during a nature walk or in your backyard. You'll only need a few supplies like leaves, paint, and paper to create unique art pieces. You can also use watercolor, markers, or crayons for leaf printing. Enjoy the process and let your child's imagination run wild!

Pumpkin Experiments

Science experiments with pumpkins can be a fun and educational way to learn about and understand various scientific concepts. One experiment you can try is the "Pumpkin Volcano" experiment. All you will need is a pumpkin, baking soda, vinegar, dish soap, and food coloring (optional).

  1. Carve a small hole in the top of the pumpkin and remove the seeds and pulp.

This is a great sensory activity and you can create a sensory bag by putting the seeds and pulp into a ziplock bag.

  2. Mix a solution of vinegar, dish soap, and food coloring.

  3. Pour the solution into the pumpkin until it is about halfway full.

  4. Add a spoonful of baking soda and watch as the pumpkin erupts with a foamy, colorful volcano!

Helpful suggestion: Place the pumpkin in a baking tray or do it outside as there may be a big chemical reaction based on the amount of solution and baking soda.

Making Pumpkin Spice Scented Play-Doh

Playing with Play-Doh is not only fun but is a great way to develop children's fine motor skills and hand strength. By making your own Play-Doh, it encourages children to follow simple step directions and be creative. So, grab the ingredients below and have fun making something new!

Ingredients:

  • 1 can of pumpkin

  • 2 cups of cornstarch

  • 1 tbsp of cinnamon

  • Optional sensory play food: Pumpkin seeds, chocolate chips, and sprinkles as fun additions for tactile and edible play!

Directions:

  1. Mix pumpkin and cinnamon in a medium/large bowl.

  2. Gradually add cornstarch until the mixture is doughy, not sticky.

  3. Keep refrigerated until ready for play.
